How to use a cock ring

A cock ring is used to keep blood flow in the penis, causing it to become engorged. You place it over your flaccid or semi-erect penis to keep it harder for longer, and it has the added benefit of actually making your penis look bigger. You can put it around the base of the shaft, or slip the testicles through as well. Whether you choose a metal, silicone, rubber or plastic cock ring, the application process is essentially the same. Here’s a handy guide on using a cock ring for the first time so that you can make the most of its many benefits.

Step-By-Step Guide to Using a Cock Ring

Before the fun begins, take a look at our handy guide so that you don’t get yourself into any uncomfortable positions, cause injury to your penis or damage your new toy.

  1. Know your cock ring - Do you have a stretchy silicone or rubber cock ring, or is it made of a rigid material like metal? Hopefully you measured yourself prior to buying, but if you want to check that the size of the cock ring is right then there’s a simple and quick way to check. Grab a strip of paper or a ribbon and wrap it around your penis. Make a mark where the paper joins, then lay it alongside a ruler. Divide the measurement by three and you’ve got your size.
  2. Clean it - After you’ve taken your cock ring out of the packaging, it should be given a thorough cleaning. Metal and silicone rings are non-porous which means there’s no risk of nasty bacteria building up on the surface. You need to be a bit more careful with porous materials like rubber or TPR as these cannot be sterilised. Run your cock rung under hot water and clean it with a bit of soap, or use a toy cleaner. Some materials can even be placed in the top rack of the dishwasher or cleaned with a 10% bleach solution. Read the manufacturer’s instructions carefully to see what they recommend.
  3. Prepare your hair - Some people like to trim their public hair before applying a cock ring, particularly if it’s made of a stretchy material. Long public hair can get trapped in between the ring and your skin, and taking the ring off can be seriously painful. So consider a trim or a wax before starting. Shorter public hair has the added bonus of making your cock look bigger!
  4. Lube up - We highly recommend you lube yourself up before applying the cock ring, as this will make the whole process a lot easier. We’ve got a great range of lubes available on our website. Just make sure you don’t use a silicone-based lube with a silicone cock ring or it can damage the surface of your toy. You should also keep the lube handy so you can re-apply if needed.
  5. Slip it on - It’s usually easiest to pop it on in the standing position. If you’ve just got a regular cock ring (as opposed to a cock-and-ball ring) then you should put it on before you become fully erect. If it’s a stretchy ring, stretch it wide and put your penis through and bring it down to the base of the shaft. If you want to put the testicles through as well, these should be pushed through one at a time after the penis is in. Some people prefer this way, as it means less risk of the ring slipping off during sex (ie. When things get a bit wet). If you’ve got a metal ring, you need to do things a little differently. Start with the balls, pushing one through at a time and then folding your penis downwards and pushing it through while you pull the ring back towards your body. Make sure your skin isn’t pulling or stretching under the ring, and spend a few moments checking the pressure. It should be comfortable and not too tight. You can even get your partner involved, and ask them to stretch the ring while you place yourself inside it.
  6. Learn your limits - When using a cock ring for the first time, we recommend starting off slow. Keep it on for five minutes at first, during foreplay and then take it off for a bit. Pop it back on and increase the time as you become more comfortable with the sensations. Use it during oral sex, or anal sex and see how it feels in different situations. If it ever becomes painful, take your cock ring off immediately. It’s supposed to make sex more enjoyable, not cause you pain.
  7. Play safe - We don’t recommend wearing a stretchy cock ring for longer than 30 minutes at a time, or you can do yourself some serious damage. Penile tissue is extremely sensitive, and if you wear a cock ring too long it can become bruised, numb or extremely sore. The right sized cock ring is the most important thing, and it should only increase the size of your erection slightly and not in a pronounced way. If your penis starts to throb, swell, turn blue or feel cold then you need to take the cock ring off immediately. We advise that you re-check the size and get something slightly bigger. If you fall asleep with a cock ring on, or wear one for too long then it can do some serious damage to the tissue and cause blood to coagulate there. If this happens you will need to head straight to the ER.
  8. Clean up - When you’re done, give your cock ring a thorough clean according to the manufacturer’s instructions. If it’s got one, make sure you remove the bullet vibrator before getting the cock ring wet. Wipe off any residual lubricant, as this will make it safe for next time and avoid bacteria building up on the surface. If you’ve spent good money on your cock ring then you should aim to take good care of it so that it can last you a long time.
  9. Storage - Pop your cock ring in a pouch or a satchel and store it safely alongside your other toys. If you’ve got a silicone cock ring, it should not be placed in direct contact with any other silicone product as the competing materials can cause one another to break down.

Other Ways to Enjoy Your Cock Ring

It looks simple, but a cock ring can be a versatile little toy. Why not try out a few different uses and get more bang for your buck.

  • As a Finger Vibrator - Many cock rings come with removable bullet vibrators that slip through the base of the ring, like the Ovo B1 or the Cal Exotics COLT Vibrating Leather Cock Ring. Why not put your cock ring around your fingers and penetrate your partner, using the vibrating device to stimulate clitoris, nipples, perineum or other sensitive areas.
  • Over the Balls - Stretching a cock ring over your balls, as well as the shaft, can heighten the experience. Some cock rings come with two separate rings for the cock and balls, and that means you can buy a rigid material like metal.
  • Double it Up - Once you are comfortable with the feeling of a cock ring, why not double (or triple!) it up and try more than one. The Silicone Island Rings from Cal Exotics or the Titanmen Tools Cock Ring Set from Doc Johnson allow you to experiment with the feeling of placing rings over a few different parts of your shaft and balls simultaneously.
