Looking After Your Sex Toys
Looking after your sex toys makes a lot of sense. After all, they bring you a lot of pleasure and are always there when you are ready to play. Your adult toy chest likely contains toys that you have spent more than just a few dollars to obtain. A well-built adult toy can last for a long, long period of time, and even longer if you care for the toy properly and maintain the toy.
Adult Toy Hygiene
It is vital that you practice good hygiene with your sex toys, just as you do with your own body. You can actually contract a sexually transmitted disease from sharing your sex toys with someone else. For this reason, it is important that you practice safe sex with your sex toy, just as if it is an extension of yourself. This means using condoms in the same situations that you would otherwise use a condom. It is important to note that you can develop a bacterial infection if you do not properly clean your toy. In fact, if you use an adult toy near the anus or as an anal toy, and then insert it into the vagina or use it near your urethra, then you can get a urinary tract infection or other type of infection.
Cleaning Your Adult Toys
Cleaning your adult toys and looking after your sex toys is a responsible thing to do. Most toys can be easily cleaned with warm water and mild soap. Remember, if your toy has batteries, do not submerge the part of the toy that holds the batteries, and do not submerge any toy that is not specifically made to be waterproof. You can find out if the toy is waterproof by referring to the manufacturer’s instructions or the toy owner’s manual. The type of material that the toy is made from will play a big role in how you must clean it, including the following common materials:
- Silicone. Many toys are made from silicone, and it is an easy-to-clean material that is nonporous, which means that there are no pores for germs and bacteria to hide inside. You can boil silicone toys in a pot on your stove for five minutes in order to sterilize them. Most silicone toys are also dishwasher safe. You can also use special toy cleaners that are made for silicone toys to clean the toy and sterilize it between uses.
- Skin. Realistic-looking skin materials that are marketed as Cyberskin, Futurotic, Fauxskin, and so forth, are best cleaned with a spray adult toy cleaner. Many toys that are made with this type of “skin”, which is actually thermal plastic, can be cleaned with soap and water, although it can be hard to really get all of the soap out. This is because the material is porous. Spray cleaners are quite effective in sterilizing these toys when used as directed.
- Metal or glass. Metal and glass are both simple to clean, since they are nonporous. You can use a solution of one part bleach to nine parts water to clean your metal toys and glass toys. You can also boil the toy for five minutes or use hot water and soap to disinfect the toy. Dishwashing is not recommended for most metal adult toys, since some rinsing agents can be corrosive to metal. No matter how you choose to clean your metal toy, do not use jewelry cleaner on the toy. Be certain to dry the toy so that it does not corrode or rust.
- Acrylic, rubber, jelly rubber, and vinyl. These toys can all be cleaned using good old-fashioned mild soap with water. Rinse and allow to air dry before storing.
When looking after your sex toys, always defer to the manufacturer’s instructions before the tips above, since each manufacturer knows best how to clean the toys that they make.
